Elnett hairspray is legendary. It’s been the one-and-only among editorial and celebrity stylists for as long as I can remember. The secret formula: a micro diffuser that sprays an ultra-fine mist of something so miraculous it manages to remain invisible while holding hair in place with the power of 10 men and the shine of 10,000 suns. Oh, and it protects hair from the horrors of humidity. Then does your laundry. No wonder people used smuggle it into the States before it rolled out to most drugstores last year. L’Oréal tells me that over the past four decades Elnett has evolved, incorporating breakthrough technology and optimized ingredients, to remain a cult-classic. Since I’m not much of a hairspray connoisseur, I need a couple of volunteers to be the judge. If you’re willing to wield a can and report back, please leave a comment with the one hair product you can’t live without. Happy Friday!

A brilliant photographer whose fresh, documentary-style work is also in frequent rotation in InStyle, and Town & Country, Liz has pretty much seen it all when it comes to bridal beauty. Here, her do’s and don’ts for looking picture-perfect on your big day:

Get your hair and makeup professionally done. Be sure to do a test run and take photos!

If you don’t normally wear makeup, get it done professionally. It’s much harder to create a nature, subtle look.

Avoid mineral makeup. It can be too reflective in flash photography.

Dark lipstick shades can look black in sepia and black & white photos.

My favorite classic red lip color: MAC Pro Longwear in Lasting Lust.

False eyelashes are fraught with problems—particularly full strips, which can pull away from all the crying and hugging. Stick to individual lashes if you’re set on wearing them.

I hate, hate, hate, fake tans.

Wearing hair down is so cool, but it’s a risk. Up do’s are more practical.

Don’t fight your natural hair texture. If have straight hair, curls are going to fall. Whatever style you choose has to last all night.

Get your roots done the day before the wedding. You don’t want them showing in photos!

Groom essentials: Teeth whitening, caution when wearing facial hair, and blotting papers for keeping shine at bay. The Body Shop’s are guy-friendly because they don’t contain powder.

Get a good night’s rest before the wedding. Meditate before bed, or take an Ambien if you think you’ll have trouble falling asleep.

If you’re prone to cold sores, ask your doctor to prescribe Valtrex as a precaution.

Avoid salt and alcohol the night before, which can make people look puffy. Drink a ton of water instead!

I do enjoy a good cleanse now and again. It can be as simple as juicing in the morning, or eating only fruits and vegetables for a few days. Although there’s not much scientific proof to support cleanses, it doesn’t take any for me to know that something’s doing my body good when I feel more energized, when my skin looks clearer, my stomach is flatter, and my cravings have diminished. Contrary to popular belief, the hardest thing about detoxing isn’t going hungry. It’s meal planning. Try making three squares a day that don’t include sugar, dairy, wheat, or meat and see what happens. Enter: Cooler Cleanse. Created by Eric Helms, Salma Hayek’s personal juiceman, this made-to-order living-food liquid detox is now available nationwide in three- or five-day plans. I tried it for one day last week, and it was BRILLIANT.

On the first morning, Fedex delivered the goods. Cold-pressed and packed on ice in a cooler, natch. Each bottle is labeled 1-6. You drink one every two hours, in the assigned order. I loved lining up my nifty-looking rations in the fridge, like the greedy little eater that I am. The first drink, a blend of hard-core green vegetables like kale and dandelion greens, was a bitter pill to swallow. But it’s also drink #3, so I learned to live with it. The other flavors are absolutely delicious and unexpectedly exotic—grapefruit with mint, young coconut water, almond milk with dates. Six “meals” throughout the day actually felt generous to me. Just when I started feeling hungry, it was time for another drink. My steady energy made me wonder if maybe I’d be better off consuming smaller meals more frequently, instead of crashing everyday at 10 and 4 o’clock. At no point did I feel weak or headachy or hungry like I have with DIY detoxes (you’re dead to me, Master Cleanse!). In fact, I had enough in me for a gentle workout, which is recommended to things, um, flowing.

The next day I felt physically lighter and well-rested, even on 6 hours of sleep. One day isn’t long enough to reap the full benefits of this cleanse, but it was all I needed to know that I want more!

I’m not proud to admit it, but I definitely judged this fragrance by its packaging. Does a silly pink apple really strike you as something that Donna Karan would design?! Alas, I received a sample and I. Can’t. Stop. Spraying. It. The scent is intoxicatingly fruity and juicy and a little bit floral, like a summer cocktail. Or, come to think of it, an apple blossom. Every time I wear it someone will undoubtedly stop me and demand to know what it is. So here you go: DKNY Be Delicious Fresh Blossom.

P.S. Don’t be tempted by the green apple, Be Delicious. It’s not nearly as good.

But that got me thinking about all of the options out there, and how perhaps in my commitment to certain techniques (laser, razor) has made me biased. I mean, when was the last time I tried a DEPILATORY? And, does anyone still use an Epilady?! (apparently, yes.) If it’s not too personal of me to ask, what’s YOUR preferred method of hair removal? Please tell me that it’s not one of these:

Dry shampoo is quite possibly the greatest beauty invention in the free world. These oil absorbing potions refresh your roots so that you can go longer in between shampoos and stretch out your blowout. I practically stopped washing my hair altogether this summer so I could bring you this guide. At times, it wasn’t pretty. But after testing nearly a dozen dry shampoos, I discovered the real winners. Which ever one you choose, I can promise you this: Once you try dry shampoo, you’ll wonder how you ever lived without it.

Best for Fine Hair

Oscar Blandi Pronto Volumizing Dry Shampoo ($23) – Oscar makes a number of dry shampoos, but this is my favorite. Sprays on clear, not white, and gives the most amazing root boost without any stickiness or residue. Sometimes I use it on clean hair, just to give my blow-out some extra lift.

_____

Best Hold

Rene Futerer Nutria Dry Shampoo ($24) – To quote Jaimi Brooks of Fiore Beauty, “This dry shampoo is the gold standard, allowing you to keep your blowdry for an extra day or add texture to clean hair when you want to put your hair up. Plus, the powder spray is finer then other brands so you can’t mess it up.”

_

Best Buy

Batiste Dry Shampoo ($8) – Although Pssssst! gets more play in the press and among celeb stylists, Batiste is hands-down the more powerful of the two drugstore brands. And unlike Psssssst! it doesn’t make me look like I’m graying prematurely.

_

Best for Travel

Aveda Pure Abundance Hair Potion ($23) – This little bottle contains magic powder that once massaged into your roots takes on a slightly sticky consistency that thickens hair. The secret mattifying ingredient: Kaolin clay. Perfect for airplane travel or cleaning up dirty bangs!

Have you heard? When it comes to SPF, 30 is the new 15. I’ve been saying it ever since my freckles went from seasonal cuties to year-round age spots, but dermatologist Jaime Davis of Uptown Dermatology recently confirmed it. In case, like me, you’re secretly confused about the actual difference between 15 and 30, Dr. Davis explains: The higher the SPF, the longer the protection (SPF 15=it will take 15 times longer for you to burn, SPF 30=30 times longer, etc.).

She has also declared that “physical is the new chemical”—because physical sunblocks, like mineral powders and zinc or titanium dioxide, break down less quickly. The good news is that unlike the lifeguard-white sunblocks of yore, the latest formulations absorb quickly and don’t leave that filmy residue. My go-to all summer has been Supergoop! The gold standard for active, waterproof sun protection, the entire line was recently reformulated without parabens, fragrance, proplyene glycol, or oxybenzone—a common ingredient that the Environmental Working Group recently cited as potentially cancer-causing (for the full study and the EWG’s list of “safe” sunscreens, read on). I’ve taken to toting around every from Supergoop—the moisturizing Lotion, chunky Quickstick for lips and face, and the handy dandy towelettes—perfect for travel or swiping on the go.

The makers of Pantene are out to fix bad hair, and I’m not sure I’m buying it. According to a recent article in the Wall Street Journal, shampoo sales for this drug-store darling slipped considerably in 2009, leaving the company scratching it’s, um, head, and scrambling to reinvent the brand. Pantene’s new campaign features product categories like “Frizzy to Smooth,” aimed to solve common hair challenges. Who knows if the formulas have actually changed or if this is just a matter of rewording. The company also redesigned the packaging so it’s easier to spot on shelves. Since I can count on one hand the number of times I’ve used Pantene products (they always felt a bit too chemical), I took the bait and bought the Flat to Full shampoo for $4. It was just OK. Definitely too squeaky clean (ie drying) for my taste. I’m just one person though, so wondered what you all think of Pantene—do you use it? Love it? Leave your rants/raves below!
