Introducing our newest column, featuring beauty steals that are just as effective as the fancier competition. I’m the guiltiest of assuming that expensive equals better, but lately have been stumbling on some major drugstore discoveries. The whole the BB crew will be weighing in, but we love reader recommendations! Like this one from recent grad Deven, who’s trying to support her beauty habit on an intern budget. (Been there, done that.)
Sometimes I just want a break from thick, heavy face creams. I want something more, well, refreshing. And Garnier Nutritioniste Moisture Rescue Refreshing Gel-Cream ($7) is it! I love it in the summer because it’s light and non-greasy, and still delivers the moisture. But I use it year ’round because it is so gentle and lightweight it won’t interfere with other skin products, like an acne treatment gel or prescription face cream. I wear it over a retinoid and my skin stays smooth and calm. I had been using Clinique Moisture Surge Extended Thirst Relief ($49) but there wasn’t any difference except the price! –Deven

Hello lovelies! I'm Elizabeth Dehn, a beauty writer + lifestyle editor who's equally fanatical about lip gloss as juice cleansing. I live in Minneapolis with Mr. Bets and our white lab, Molly Thomas . . .

I looooove the idea of this new feature/column! I’ll be waiting with anticipation for the next one!
I like to give Clinique products a try because their sales people are very helpful but I feel like I’m always dissapointed, anyone else kind of feel the same?
Is the Garnier product scent-heavy?
Great feature!
I’m not sure how moisturizing the Garnier product is, however, given that the 3rd listed ingredient is alcohol which is super drying and causes free-radical damage and collagen breakdown. Also, this is a highly fragranced product.
Hi!
I don’t know about this particular Garnier product, but I do use the SPF 15 Moisture Rescue on a daily basis. It’s super light, non greasy and has a light, fresh scent I actually love ! Will try this gel tomorrow ;)
Looking forward to this new column.
Like Sara & Kristen, I love the idea of the save/splurge column! Can’t wait for more!
I have been a long time Clinique Moisture Surge user so I tried this out…the Garnier was light, but it burned my face :( also it wasn’t as moisurizing or calming. I will stick with my moisture surge!
