I lopped off my long hair last fall with the hopes that I could regrow it stronger and healthier. Since the first installment of Tips for Growing It Out, my hair has been slowly inching (or centimetering) its way southward. Although the added length isn’t drastic, the back is finally starting to catch up with the front, adding noticeable body to my once inverted bob (plus, it finally all goes in a ponytail). In the next few months I’ll be adding the following to my regrowth regimen:
1. 5000 mcg of Biotin per day. So many of you raved about this supplement, I finally picked some up!
2. Trying to shampoo less. I am loving the Bumble & Bumble Hair Powder to help with this.
3. Scalp massages with Aveda Beautifying Oil to stimulate the follicles (seems like a good way to get my husband involved).
What else should I add to list? Something you’d love for me to test out? Keep the fabulous feedback coming. xo –Dani

Hello lovelies! I'm Elizabeth Dehn, a beauty writer + lifestyle editor who's equally fanatical about lip gloss as juice cleansing. I live in Minneapolis with Mr. Bets and our white lab, Molly Thomas . . .

I think adding the biotin will be a big help. I actually take 10mg a day. 5mg, Once in the morning once at night. You are already drinking tons of water so that’s a mother benefit too. For my hair growth I wash slightly less and manipulate it less. So less styling as well to allow the hair to grow like crazy. I also take a host of other vitamins and take nioxin a hair supplement from Ulta. Best of luck I enjoy seeing your progress.
Dani-You are so beautiful! You’re lucky that you look amazing no matter the length of your hair. I started taking Grape Seed Oil in a capsule form from Whole Foods at the suggestion of an amazing acupuncturist I was seeing. She mentioned Grape Seed Oil is great for hair and nails and I have to say, I actually notice a difference in how quickly both my hair and nails grow. Also, since split ends are the enemy of growth – drinking lots of water and using a rich moisturizer mask treatment once a week is a great idea too. Good luck!!
Aww, Thanks Katy! You’re too kind, but I must say I really like my hair at the length it is right now! Especially now that it is starting to feel really healthy! I am going to look into the grape seed oil! ~ Dani
You should try Rehab Shampoo from Lush or their solid shampoo bar NEW :) Rehab has lots of fresh fruits and oils that help maintain your hairs health and strength, and New is full of stimulating cinnamon that will help your hair grow faster! :)
Your hair looks gorgeous! If you’re not crazy about the B&B hair powder (I hated the pigments and felt I always had black stuff on my face or getting on my clothes), I have used the Oscar Blandi dry shampoo for a few years and absolutely love it: http://www.sephora.com/product/productDetail.jsp?skuId=914101. I use the powder but it also comes in a spray, if that’s your preference.
I might be adding biotin to my supplements regimen too! Thanks for the recc.
Thanks for the tips Sam & Emma! I’m going to look into all the products you mentioned. xo.
@Emma – I agree. The B&B doesn’t work for me either, or at least makes a total mess (Dani is more gifted!). Oscar also makes a volumizing dry shampoo spray that is OFF THE HOOK.

I now eat grain free and organic, use Griffin Remedy shampoo and conditioner, use plenty of organic virgin coconut oil or organic grassfed ghee on my food, take a high quality B complex, and make sure I have lots of natural iodine in my diet. My hair is softer, shinier, growing faster, and more manageable than it has been since I was a child. I went from a pixie cut fourteen months ago to just-past-shoulder length now.
If your hair is sick, chances are good the products you’re using are bad, and/or you need a detailed panel run to check for vitamin and mineral deficiencies. Check into a clean diet for optimal beauty and take a look at EWG.org for shampoos and ingredients to avoid. Good luck!
Sorry. I just checked, and I’m about four inches past my shoulders in the back!
Try rinsing and shampooing (if you can!) in cooler to cold water. The best is to cool it down ax you go. Remember: heat is heat and heat can hurt no matter what the source. I.e. flat irons, curl irons, hot water, blow deters, the sun……
In beauty school I learned that brushing your scalp with a flat four row bristle brush stimulates & de-gunk’s your scalp. & the scalp is definitely the root of all evil. Got to take care of it ;D oh & tea tree oil is also great for your scalp. It can be added to shampoo, conditioner, other hair products, or just straight on your scalp :)
I would say make sure you are getting the right amount of vitamin A. Too much vitamin A has the same effect as not enough. Adding vitamin A in particular can not only help you hair but also your skin and nails because they are all made up of the same protein called keratin, just different types of hardness.
My hair is longer than 2 feet, all I would say is the best conditioner to use is dove, I use suave shampoo, and I also left the conditioner sit in for about 5 minutes. Also I use leave in conditioner and this clear stuff to help the split ends! [=
Also, I trim a little bit off every 3 months
(Just like, a TINY TINY drop) (enough to get rid of the split ends an I will even if there isn’t any) it’s healthier!!!
Taking 10mg of Biotin a day is just going to waste it. It is water soluable, meaning that only around 5mg will be absorbed into your body as a nutrient and the rest will just be urinated out of your system. You are only going to be spending more money by taking more than your body will soak up. Moroccan Oil has been a lifesaver for the ends of my hair and also using coconut oil/EVOO, egg white, and mayo as a hair mask. I do this once a week, keep it on for an hour and then shampoo/condition with Paul Mitchel Strength line (smells great and really makes hair feel good)
Hope some of this helps.
Frolic acid it’s a vitamin! It works amazing .
Mane and tail shampoo! Works wonders! The first time I started using it my hair grew about 4 inches in about 2 months! Plus my hair was soft and shiny! I swear by it, you get a HUGE bottle that lasts forever, I usually use it for a few months then change shampoos and then go back to it.
Thanks for this! I’m sooo mad at my hair dresser for convincing me to cut my hair into a short inverted bob after I spend so long growing it out in the first place… ughhhhh… I’m gonna have to get some of this stuff ASAP.
I put red chili powder and cinamin in my conditioner once a week. My hair grows maybe1/3 and inch a month but with this i’m getting an inch a week. The spicy-ness and heat stimulates your scalp and hair root. Works wonders! And I put advacado, honey, and egg yolk in with coconut oil once every other week. This is like a break for your hair. It says, “Ahhh.” Haha
@jessica – please, can you elaborate on your ‘recipe’ of adding cinnamon and chili powder to conditioner? And the same for the mask? Sounds like great stuff. Thanks in advance.
@jodie i never heard of cinnamon and chili powder but i have heard of garlic powder and cayenne pepper

I guess Jessica is saying to put a bit of each spice in the palm of your hand with the conditioner..and work through it…I woulld leave it for 20min with a hair cap and then rinse thoroughly
It might work, i have to try it myself…
