Our friend Kate, aka The Rad Housewife, has the most imperfectly perfect beachy waves. When we discovered that she achieves them with a diffuser, we dusted ours off and asked for a tutorial. Take it away, Kate!

There are a lot of diffusing guides out there and they all recommend something different: using duckbill clips all over your scalp, not styling your hair until it’s completely dry, standing on your head while reciting the Spanish alphabet backwards . . . But these are the steps that have always gotten stunning results—and saved me from looking like a frizzy mushroom cloud on muggy days.
1. Start with clean, damp hair. Spritz with a detangler (I like Bumble and Bumble Prep) and brush out with a wide-tooth comb.
2. Mix (or emulsify! as my stylist likes to shout) a quarter-size dollop of Bb Grooming Creme with a nickel-sized dollop of Bb Texture Creme on your palms. Begin scrunching hair at the ends, working your way to the roots.
3. Comb through hair again to evenly distribute products.
4. Scrunch hair upward, toward part, keeping fingers pointed down.
5. Hold hair dryer with diffuser nozzle pointed DOWN, and lift handfuls of hair from the ends up to the diffuser. Hold for eight seconds. Repeat! Repeat! Repeat! NOTE: Keep hairdryer on low to avoid any unnecessary frizzing.
6. Like any hairstyle, you will want to play around with it after it’s dry. I like to twist locks of hair into a spiral with my pointer finger before scrunching with Bb Brilliantine. Have fun!

Hello lovelies! I'm Elizabeth Dehn, a beauty writer + lifestyle editor who's equally fanatical about lip gloss as juice cleansing. I live in Minneapolis with Mr. Bets and our white lab, Molly Thomas . . .

Awesome step by step and photos! I have never tried this method and I love to do beach waves in the summer. Also love B&b. Thanks for the tips.
so glad you like it, katie!
Thanks for the info! I’ve had naturally curly hair well…forever…and I’ve always been intimidated of a diffuser. I’ve always tried the much more complicated air dry and don’t touch combos. I’ve been inspired :-)
