When I was a teenager, all I wanted (besides a date with the boy-next-door basketball player who is now boring and balding) was for my skin to stop shining like the top of the Chrysler building. I can still remember the powdery scent of my Cover Girl pressed powder compact that I carried with me everywhere. And god forbid anything but oil-free moisturizers touched my skin. The 16-year-old me would just DIE if she saw me slathering my face with oil, which is what I do all winter. That idea might make some of you queasy but I swear it’s the best thing ever. Plant oils like apricot and shea are the closest thing to our own natural oils, so they make perfect moisturizers. They also help balance skin when it gets out of wack, and unlike mineral oil won’t clog pores. Depending on your skin type, you can apply facial oil under your moisturizer for extra comfort, in place of your moisturizer, or as a supplement—just mix a few drops with your daily moisturizer. These are my current favorites, though good old olive oil will do just fine, too:
(Clockwise) Dr. Hauschka Normalizaing Day Oil ($43) – Ironically balances oily and blemish-prone skin without drying or irritation; Rodin Olio Lusso Luxury Face Oil ($140) – A cult-favorite among celebs, this liquid gold is rich enough to stand it for your moisturizer; Josie Maran Argan Oil ($40) – Incredibly versatile, argan oil instantly smoothes parched skin, dry cuticles, and flyaway hair; Intelligent Nutrients Anti-Aging Serum ($60) – An all-in-one miracle treatment that moisturizes, softens, protects, and undoes damage; Weleda Almond Soothing Facial Oil ($25) – Fantastically soothing for sensitive skin, light enough to use all year round, and more deliciously scented than you can possibly imagine. So why not smell for yourself? I’m giving away two to the readers who are willing to give facial oil a whirl! Just leave your name in the comments section below.
UPDATE: Congrats to Karen, Sylvia and Steve on scoring samples of one of these amazing skin-saving products!

Hello lovelies! I'm Elizabeth Dehn, a beauty writer + lifestyle editor who's equally fanatical about lip gloss as juice cleansing. I live in Minneapolis with Mr. Bets and our white lab, Molly Thomas . . .

What could be better for these dull January days?! They all look wonderful, thanks!
Lovely and so necessary in the cold, dry winters here in MN…
I use different oils on my body and face, but no any of these. I would love to try them.
I would love to try! Saw you talk about it on TCL earlier.
Putting oil on my face goes against everything I’ve ever been told. I’ve had acne since age 10. Now that I’m on the slide toward 40, it’s not so much acne as rosacea.
Apparently the worst thing I was doing was stripping my face of oil. And as far as regular moisturizer goes, I could never find any that I could tolerate – whether it be because it was too sticky, too astringent, filled with fragrance or too sticky.
Since I’ve been using Weleda almond oil on my face, it’s never felt better. And guess what? It’s not even giving me pimples!
I saw your segment (I DVR the episodes- hopefully, I am not too late) on TCL, I frequent the the Shiseido and Origins counter and have recently grown to REALLY enjoy the “Quench” line from Oil of Olay (hopefully, that’s not one that you frown upon). I have never used oils for fear that it would cause a breakout. While I will readily admit that this is pandering, I turn 59 (truly, ONE MORE YEAR until 60) on Friday. A birthday gift from TCL and Beauty Bets that could make me look (or feel) ‘younger’ would be outstanding! :) … If not, well, thank you for your tips on the show! This is my first trip to your blog and I look forward to reading it regularly.
Regards,
Sylvia
I’ve been really wanting to try a face oil. My skin is drier this winter than ever before. I saw you talk about these on TCL today. And almond is my favorite scent!
i’m in need! hydrate this face right up!!
My sensitive skin desperately needs some hydrating oils… How I would love to try a few!
I would love to try face oil! The heater is really drying out my skin….
This would be wonderful! I need something new to help with my face, this Michigan “COLD” weather has taken its toll on my skin :(.
Saw you on TCL replay at 1:30 AM. This MN winter has been brutal and my face is totally drying up no matter how much water I drink, or how often I run the humidifier. Maybe face oil is the answer? I’m certainly willing to give it a try, if you’ll hook me up! It’s either that, or a trip to the tropics. . . . Help!
I enjoyed your TCL segment on face oils for hydration and appreciate your insight on product effectiveness.
I’m willing to try anything during the cold Maine winters. Thanks
I’d love to try it!
Hi Elizabeth!
Please enter me in the Twin Cities Live drawing! Love your suggestions. Great job!
Ann
I have been hesistant to use oil because I am afraid of breaking out but these sound great! I shop at Whole foods sometimes so will probably try the Weleda.

Finally got a chance to see a complete Beauty Bets segment on TCL! Wonderul product suggestions – and a variety of prices. Appreciate your frank comments. Excited to try something new during this cold, dry winter! Thanks.
@MaryBeth – LOVE Eminence products. Particularly the Coconut Cream Cleanser and any of the masks. The best facials I’ve had incorporate eminence.
Oh, I would love to try these. I live in a northern climate (with LONG winters) and since turning 40 a few years ago I’m noticing my old tried and true beauty products aren’t cutting it anymore. These facial oils just may do the trick!
I really enjoyed your tv clip. Thanks for sharing all the great info.
I have extremely dry skin, all year round. Would love to try the face oils.
thanks.

I swear by Dr. Hauschka’s normalizing oil – I gave it a try one time when I was in Whole Foods because my skin was combination and I wanted something for winter. It gave my face a little dewey texture and I loved it under my moisterizer and foundation. I got so many compliments on how my skin looked. I originally wanted to buy the Rodin but it was out of my budget. I knew Dr. Hauschka’s products were very good. I’m curious how the Rodin and the Intelligent serum works in comparison – any clue? My Whole Foods just started carrying the Intelligent so I might give it a try to compare it to Dr. Hauschka’s. But curious if you tried either.
Hi @Ann! I haven’t tried Dr. Hauschka’s oil, but I would definitely give IN’s a whirl to compare – it’s certainly just as good as Rodin and I actually prefer it! Especially at half the cost!
I’ve been using Mama Oil by Burt’s Bee’s for quite awhile now and love it!! (8.00 @ Target) made from Lemon.*nd Sweet Almond Oils, it is all natural, smells great and works amazing on my face, neck and chest – a few drops morning and @ night. ; )
