Summer has officially arrived: I’m wearing white pants, I’ve spilled on my white pants. I’m experimenting with self-tanners (more on this next week!). And, I’ve planted my herb garden. It’s nothing fancy, really, but it’s mine. Very soon I’ll be plucking fresh sprigs of herbaceous goodness for mint juleps, caprese salad, my semi-famous grilled lamb, and . . . a totally invigorating facial steam. Nothing opens up pores, increases circulation, preps the skin for a deep-cleansing mask (love this one), and imparts a healthy glow like a good steam. You don’t need to go to the spa to treat yourself. Simply:
- cleanse face per usual
- boil a pot of water
- carefully transfer the water to a large bowl
- toss in a handful of fresh herbs into the bowl – basil, rosemary and mint are v. refreshing
- cover head with a towel and hold face over steamy water for 5–10 minutes
That’s it! A slight addiction to steaming may ensue—just go with it. Summer will be over before we know it.

Never thought about herbs! I was just giving my teenage son a Tea Tree Oil steam facial though. Was inspired by your acne post of last week.
Thanks!
I need to do this, like right now! My afternoon needs a little invigoration…
Meghan, you crack me up! Do it!
I’m 100% addicted to steam. So much so that I’ve tried and tried to seek out a spa/salon that has a steam room (with no success) JUST to go for the steam. It’s SO GOOD for the skin! They say you needn’t “wash” after a steam, but simply rinse off the extracted impurities. Ahhhhhh. But on that note, don’t bother with steam facial machines. WIMPY.
Katrina! Spot Spa is just down the street from the Institute, below the Bulldog NE. They have a private steam room that you can use for $15 with a treatment—they might even let you do so as a stand alone.Even better, do what I do and join LIfe Time Fitness where you can steam every day after you work out! p.s. – Oh I saw your Temptu comment, and I wish I had one to give away!
Very good products and helpful
