When Meghan McAndrews, aka the High Plains Thrifter, started a classy, quick-witted blog about thrift store shopping, I slapped my forehead and thought: Well it’s about time. (Also: Thank GOD I wasn’t tasked with this project). Meghan has a knack for hunting and gathering the good stuff, and that includes budget beauty products. (Again: Not my middle name.) She’s a girly-girl in the best possible sense, so you know her picks are going to be spot-on.

Nivea Crème ($9) – I use this classic moisturizer year-round to get skin that glows without glitter. It works wonders on roughed up cuticles, too. I look for it at Mexican markets, where a huge tub can go for less than $5. Garnier Nutritioniste Skin Renew Anti-Puff Eye Roller ($13) – This cooling roller which soothes my puffy, (beauty) sleep-deprived eyes is a morning must. Cover Girl Outlast Lip Stain in Berry Smooch ($8) —This gives lips a raspberry-bitten look for hours, at a fraction of the price of Benetint. This shade is perfect —like an exaggerated version of my natural lip color. It layers well under gloss, too. Cover Girl TruBlend Minerals Mineral Blush in Shimmering Sands ($7) – I love playing up my cheeks, and this feather-light peachy-pink powder creates the most summery, sun-kissed cheeks. Plus, the amount of powder you get for the money makes it a total bargain.L’Oreal EverStrong Deep Replenishing Masque ($8) – With hair as long as mine, I struggle with breakage. I treat my mane once a week with this extra-thick, great-smelling masque. It detangles and keeps my hair soft for days. The fact that it’s sulfate-free and vegan is a bonus. Velcro hair rollers ($6) – I’m not coordinated enough to get professional quality blow-out results at home, but Velcro rollers help me fake it. I learned how from this You Tube tutorial featuring an adorable Southern gal. Maybelline Lash Stiletto in Very black ($7) – There’s something about this brush that lengthens lashes like nothing else, without clumping or flaking. I’ll never buy department-store mascara again. TRESemme Fresh Start Dry Shampoo for Oily/Straight to Normal Hair ($4) – I only wash my hair a couple times a week, and this dry shampoo saves me on the days in between. It adds rough texture so teasing is a breeze, give bobby pins something grip, and maintains my ironed-in curls.
