Looking back (almost 8 years—I was practically a child bride), I’m somewhat mortified by my wedding day makeup. My red lipstick was too dark for photos, my skin was too dry thanks to my preventative over-use of Proactiv.

And I really should’ve done something about that farmer tan on my arms, however faint it was.

Let’s just say there’s a reason the photog didn’t take any close-ups. If I could do it all over again, I’d get married on a beach with my hair down and nothing on my face but bronzer. Alas. Allow me to save you from my misfortunes with a few DIY bridal beauty tips, courtesy of Beverly Hills makeup artist Juliana Landis.

PREP
Perspiration is a huge factor to consider when it comes to brides. The key to long-lasting makeup is to start with an oil control base. Try: MAC Prep & Prime Skin Refined Zone Treatment controls oil and evens out skin tone over time.

FOUNDATION
An oil-free foundation with medium coverage will cover imperfections without looking too heavy or cakey. I love to use Make Up For Ever HD Foundation on brides and on photo shoots. It gives such a flawless finish and looks great in pictures.

CHEEKS
The most important step in creating a beautiful blushing bride is – blush! It’s a critical step to avoid looking washed out in photographs. (Bobbi Brown blushes come in super-natural shades and stay put all day.) Avoid anything with shimmer as it doesn’t photograph well, and if you use a bronzer make sure it’s matte.

EYES
Eyes should be as natural as possible to create a classic and timeless look. Use a beige color all over the entire lid, a taupe color in the crease, and a sweep of peach across the lid. This color combination will give the appearance of a no-makeup look. Line top and bottom rims with a soft brown pencil, like MAC Eye Kohl in Teddy.

LASHES
Consider adding individual false lashes to add drama. Make sure to use waterproof glue, or better yet—have semi-permanent lashes applied by a professional. These will stay put through the wedding day tears and see you through your honeymoon.

LIPS
To ensure long lasting lip color, use a lip liner a few shades darker than your natural skin tone (Beauty for Real makes a universally flattering one). Fill in with lipstick applied with a lip brush. This combination will hold much better than lip gloss.

TOUCH-UPS
Blotting papers are an absolute must for eliminating shine throughout the day. Keep them in your purse or with the maid of honor for quick touch-ups. Sonia Kashuk’s are inexpensive and can be found at any Target store.
