At some point, everybody wants it. And if you don’t, you’ve already got it. I’m talking about BIG, FAT, TEXAS-SIZED hair. The kind most of us can only get from a major blow-out, heavy teasing, hot rollers, or some serious crimping (please, don’t). But so often that hard work goes to waste when, 10 minutes after walking out the door, your hair heads south. That’s all about to change, with the forthcoming mega-watt Control Force Firm Hold Hair Spray from Aveda. Although not launching until June 27, it was used backstage at NYFW, and last week at Minneapolis designer Laura Fulk’s runway show. That’s where I saw the big black can in action, and it means business (I’m seriously considering carrying one around in my summer satchel just in case anyone tries to mess with me.) Although I wouldn’t suggest a pompadour or bouffant for the office, stylist Bethany Brihn of Miyagi Salon recommends the following for natural-looking, lasting volume:
- Lift half-inch sections of hair, spraying Control Force underneath at the roots as you go
- Gently back-comb the underside of each section
- Smooth hair exterior with a brush to create lasting yet natural volume.
FYI: This super spray is also flake-free, humidity-resistant, and packed with UV filters and antioxidants to protect hair all summer long. It’s almost as essential as sunscreen.

NICE! Add in the lovely aroma that only Aveda can offer and I’m good to go.
Do you know how it compares to Firmata?
Wow, that is some BIG hair : )
I’m SOOOOO excited for this product to come out!! We heard about it a few weeks ago and are geeking out.
I know this will be stronger than Air Control, and similar in hold but much less wet than Firmata.
Kat, I love that you geek out about prods. Thank you for deciphering the many sprays of Aveda. This one is definitely bas-a**. I can say that on my own blog, right??
I got an advanced bottle of this a few months ago and want to carry it with me at all times. Whenever I’m feelin’ a little Loretta Lynn hair, it never fails.
[...] this Texas-sized hair? I do love that pic. And I know that you’ve have been pining away for Aveda [...]
