After making its debut last week, DIY Day is back! I wasn’t sure what the response would be, but it turns out there’s something cathartic about getting back to the basics. This week I promised to share my hair mask recipe, which I actually gleaned from Whole Living magazine. It sounds kind of gross, feels super slimy, and rinses out rather slowly. HOWEVER: My hair looks like a million dollars the next day. Thick and smooth and magically free of split ends. The yogurt and egg add moisture and protein, which strengthens each strand. I’m not sure what the lemon juice does besides make the mask smell like pie!
YOGURT HAIR MASK
1/2 c plain yogurt
1 T freshly squeezed lemon juice
1 egg
Blend all ingredients in a bowl until smooth. After shampooing, apply the mixture to hair and scalp. Leave on for about 20 minutes, preferably with your hair wrapped in towel so the mask doesn’t drip everywhere. Rinse hair thoroughly with warm water, then follow with conditioner if your hair is dry or needs detangling. Style as usual and admire your hotness. Note: The results are must more noticeable the following day so plan ahead!

Hello lovelies! I'm Elizabeth Dehn, a beauty writer + lifestyle editor who's equally fanatical about lip gloss as juice cleansing. I live in Minneapolis with Mr. Bets and our white lab, Molly Thomas . . .

I am adding this DIY idea to my ‘Leaving on a trip’ list. I always seem to have a few spoonfuls of yogurt and an egg or two left hanging around in my fridge as I’m packing my bags to go somewhere. This is perfect! Nothing wasted and purdy hair when I arrive at my destination.
Thanks so much! Can’t wait!
Just curious, does it matter if the yogurt is fat-free? Thanks!
Lisa – the fattier the yogurt, the more moisturizing the mask! I usually have low-fat on hand, so that’s what I use.
I tried this – it smells like cake-batter ice cream, yum! – and I loved what it did to my hair! Thanks beauty bets!
A split-end free day? Count me IN.
Made my hair super fluffy <3 and soft
I’m about to try it and I have a question. When u rinse it out with warm water do u wait till your hair is dry until u do the conditioner or right after you rinse it?

My mom used to make great DIY hair masks.
1 cup yogurt (full fat if possible)
1/2 avocado
1/2 banana
1-2 eggs
1 Tbsp conditioner
1 gel cap of vitamin E
Throw it in a blender quickly and apply generously. Leave in for 2-4 hours with a showercap on and a towel (if you can sit in a steam room — or steamy bathroom for 20-30 minutes even better!). The natural heat that your head emits will help the goop really work its way into your hair follicles, but can get a little drippy…
Wash out with shampoo and conditioner. And voila! Gorgeous hair for about 2-3 days!
The yogurt, avocado and banana provide lots of essential oils and natural moisture. The egg helps hold it all together!
Is the hair wet or dry through this process?
