Back in the day, I concocted a lot of homemade beauty treatments. I didn’t have the money for fancy prods, and was somewhat of a tree-hugger (Birkenstocks and the dawn of recycling will do that to a girly-girl). Egg whites were my go-to ingredient for face masks, and I regularly squeezed lemon in my hair to give it natural highlights. Sound familiar? On a recent trip to NC, my sister-in-law suggested a DIY spa day. I was not exactly thrilled. Until we arrived at the natural foods store, and it was like the mother ship calling me home. Now I’m on a mission to find recipes that work, and don’t make a total mess of my kitchen/bathroom. First up, a super-simple body scrub that’s packed with energizing ingredients, and feels and smells ALMOST as good as the Brown Sugar Body Polish from Fresh.
SUGAR-SUGAR BODY SCRUB
2 T olive oil
1/2 cup turbinado (raw) sugar
10 drops blood orange essential oil (or any flavah you like)
1/4 cup coffee grounds from a freshly brewed pot
Mix everything together in a large bowl, like so, while noting my eyelash extensions:
It takes all of two minutes to make. I took the mixing bowl directly to the shower because I’m lazy like that, then popped the leftover scrub into the fridge for the next day—I like it best when fresh!

Do you DIY? Care to share a recipe with Beauty Bets readers? This could become a regular column, if y’all are into it? Let me know!

I love this idea! I think you are going to find a lot of great “recipes” along the way. You just KNOW they are out there.
I remember mixing rolled oats and milk? to make an exfoliating mask in high school. Kinda messy, yes, but really did work wonders to exfoliate and moisturize. Maybe you need to do some digging on that for us and see what you can find :-) It;s been too many years for me to remember the specifics of the recipe, unfortunately.
Egg whites? just by themselves? I’m intrigued…
My favorite DIY is a green tea and olive oil bath! Buy the cheapest green tea bags you can (I think Cub or Rainbow sells a 24 pack for like, $2) throw about a dozen in (more, i suppose if you have a big bathtub). Then, I either do a sugar and olive oil scrub, or if I’m just relaxing, drizzle about 1/2 c of cheap (do not use the good stuff) olive oil into the tub. Skin feels awesome when you come out!
Brown sugar and baby oil. Super exfoliating and leaves you amazingly soft.
Can get messy, so I use it standing in the tub. (Be careful the next time you take a shower – it’s slippery!)
It’s a fabulous idea for a regular column. This post could not have come at a better time for me.
Does the lemon squeezing really work for natural highlights? If so, please please please do share.
Another question: Do you know of any DIY hair ‘treatments’?
PS ♥-ing your eyelash extensions!
Salome – The lemon juice works, but you have to sit in the sun! I did it all the time as a teenager.
Next week: A hair mask you will love!
Could you put some of that brown stuff in a pretty little jar for me?
Thanks BB! Really looking forward to next week’s hair mask.
You’re the best!
[...] making its debut last week, DIY Day is back! I wasn’t sure what to expect, but even you product-loving people were crazy about [...]
I take my old plastic store-bought sugar scrub container and fill it almost to the top with turbinado sugar. Then I pour in baby oil (the kind that has aloe vera and vitamin E in it) slowly to let the baby oil absorb into the mix without overdoing it. Then, I dump in some honey, as much as the jar will allow. I’ve found that honey really makes my skin glow and evens its tone, as well as makes the mix sticky as opposed to runny. That way, when I slap the mix onto my skin, it doesn’t just run all over the place and the sugar particles can really scrub away. Finally, a dash of IMITATION vanilla, NOT vanilla extract. I’ve found that vanilla extract contains alcohol, which dries out the skin, so I avoid it for my scrubs. Stir it all up, and boom!
Hello BB,
I was just wondering where i could find blood orange essential oil??
I would check Whole Foods or your local co-op! Otherwise, online. This looks like a good one:
