For today’s head-scratcher I rang up makeup artist extraordinaire Suzy Martin for a professional opinion. She not only works with celebs and hot models, but is humble, hilarious, and my go-to for a super-fresh face that lasts all night. You can book her for a special event or just because at suzymartin@mac.com
Q: Is waterproof mascara bad for your lashes? –Caitlin
A: It is not as good for your lashes as (regular) water-resistant mascara for several reasons. First, the agents used to make it waterproof is drying to lashes. Second, it takes more effort to remove waterproof mascara, which can lead to excess rubbing and tugging on your lashes and delicate eye area. As an alternative, apply one coat of water-resistant mascara to act as a buffer, and top it with a coat of waterproof mascara to help seal the deal. When you remove the waterproof mascara, use something oily like Andrea EyeQ’s Makeup Remover Pads ($4 at drugstores), which break down the mascara nicely, and condition your lashes.

Thank you thank you thank you! This is so helpful to know. I’m glad you pointed out that regular mascara itself is water resistant. Good point!
Great info especially for runners who don’t want to look scary after working out!!
Thanks for your information. I am going to take what I learned from your post and write about it on my website. Thanks so much…
Good to know. Still leaning toward waterproof b/c my eyes constantly leak in the cold air of winter, and leaking causes running, etc. BUT … I also read your piece on Buxon, and may have to try that.
